The British government has recently made an important announcement for international students studying in the UK. Starting from January 2024, most international students will no longer be allowed to bring their dependants with them on their student visa, except for those enrolled in research postgraduate programs.This decision was communicated by home secretary Suella Braverman in a written statement. The government believes that it is necessary to remove the right for international students to bring dependants unless they are pursuing postgraduate courses specifically designated as research programs.

Data from the Home Office reveals that there has been a significant increase in the number of visas granted to dependants of sponsored students. In the year ending December 2022, approximately 136,000 visas were issued, which is more than eight times the number granted in 2019 (16,000).

Additionally, the government has decided to eliminate the option for students to switch from a student visa to a work visa before completing their studies. These changes are part of the government’s efforts to reduce migration to the UK, while still aiming to host 600,000 international students per year by 2030.

Fortunately, there have been no modifications to the two-year post-study work visa, which is a positive development welcomed by universities in the UK. Anne Marie Graham, the chief executive of the UK Council for International Student Affairs, expressed her disappointment with the new policy regarding dependants for postgraduate taught courses. She acknowledged that the changes were made due to the financial pressures faced by international students regarding living costs and accommodation. However, she believes that this policy will disproportionately affect potential international students who are unable to bring their dependents and may choose to study elsewhere.

Jamie Arrowsmith, the director of Universities UK International, emphasized the need for more information about the specific programs that are affected. He recognized that certain groups of students, such as women and students from particular countries, would be more adversely impacted. He urged the government to collaborate with the education sector to limit and monitor the effects on these groups and on universities, which are already facing significant financial challenges. The review process announced by the government should take these concerns into consideration.
